Great anatomy lesson for the kids at BodyWorlds.

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

When I heard the BodyWorlds exhibit was in Houston I knew we had to go. My kids have been BIG into anatomy, human and otherwise, for the longest time now. We watch surgeries on Discovery Health almost every evening before bed. We read book after book about the human body, including many probably intended for at least high school level. They love it and have so many questions.

BodyWorlds is an art/science exhibit which displays preserved human bodies in all sorts of different artful poses. No doubt it was interesting, yet . . . I guess somewhat disturbing.

I am reminded of the Seinfeld episode, titled “The Kramer” I believe, where an artist asks Kramer to pose for a portrait. The painting ends up in an art exhibit where an older couple are discussing it saying “disturbing . . . and yet I can’t look away”. :-)

Is parental involvement the big difference in student success?

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Is parental involvement the key difference in making a successful student? I have always felt that it is. In this month in Reader’s Digest the article, How to Raise an A+ Student, looks at three families, including one homeschooling family who have raised successful students. It is a good read which shines a positive light on homeschooling.

Our failed solar cooking experiment.

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

I’ve been wanting to try solar cooking using the parabolic reflector method. I should have taken more time to get it right. We ended up using a reflecting car shade, like what is spread across the front windshield of a car. I wrapped it in a parabolic shape the best I could but really it was not done well at all. We used a black cooking pot and were trying to cook rice. It sat there all day and didn’t cook. Obviously it is very important to focus the heat directly at the pot and I think that is where we failed. We will have to try this again.
